May 2012

Greetings!

April marked my 30th year living in California. I arrived at SFO with a bright orange Kelty external frame pack, a return ticket and not much more. I took the Greyhound bus to Santa Cruz and six months later sold my return ticket. I held a string of jobs my first few years in Santa Cruz. Among them were host at the Kiva retreat, a clothing optional day spa (a perfect setting for a nineteen-year-old New Yorker), a prep cook at a Chinese restaurant, and an occasional day laborer at Bonny Doon Vineyards. At this point in my life, my experience with wine had been mainly Almaden and Manicshewitz. But all that changed, slowly but surely, living in Santa Cruz.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to discover some wines from Santa Cruz County that have all the hallmarks of a Community Wines selection: deliciousness, distinctiveness, and a great price to value ratio. River Run wines remind me of a simpler time in Santa Cruz. They are unpretentious, full flavored, made by an old hippie, but not hippie wines. Francie and I were so taken with River Run that we bought four of their wines: Chardonnay, Viognier, Zinfandel and Negrette. All of these wines make me happy (almost as much as working at the naked day spa).

Making things even better, Andrew, the owner of the Real Wine Company who distributes River Run, donates a portion of his proceeds to Rocket Dog Rescue, a great organization.

To introduce you to these wines, we are offering them both individually and as a specially priced four pack. Try one of each and you’ll save 10%.

2008 River Run Mountanos Vineyard Chardonnay (Mendocino, organic grapes) NEW!
California Chardonnay is like research or the word genius – terribly overused and abused – but the genuine article is still a rewarding experience. This one is oak free. You can actually taste the grape in all its glory, and it is glorious.
$12.75/bottle, $137.70/case w/10% discount

2010 River Run Viognier (Santa Cruz County) SOLD OUT
The winemaker describes this as “raised without the dubious benefit of chemical sprays … aged in stainless steel barrels and bottled early to preserve the stunning fruit qualities possible with Viognier.” It has a crisp mouth-feel with a flowery bouquet. Make no mistake – this wine is dry.
$17.00/bottle, $183.60/case w/10% discount

2008 River Run Negrette (Circle S Vineyard, San Benito County) SOLD OUT
This grape variety is usually found in the Southwest of France, and apparently there are only three vineyards that have it in the U.S. I like French Negrette, and when I saw a domestic one, I had to give it a try. I was extremely pleased. Not to mention, Francie loves it! This wine has great soul, and a wonderful polish; it’s a perfect red for things coming off the grill.
$17.00/bottle, $183.60/case w/10% discount

2007 River Run Wirz Late Harvest Vineyard Zinfandel 375ml (Cienaga Valley) NEW!
We’ll let the winemaker speak again about this not-to-be-missed beauty. “The vineyard is 110+ years old and I can't tell it what to do, but about every 6 years I can get a late harvest wine from the twisted vines. 2010 was the best year since 2003 and the entire 5 acres yielded 300 gallons of wine of unparalleled intensity. Fermented in neutral oak the inky wine is loaded with berry fruit qualities. 2.4% residual sugar, 17.1% alcohol.” Please note this is a 375ml bottle. It’s perfect for after dinner or with really bold flavors.
$12.75/bottle, $137.70/case w/10% discount

2010 Binz + Bratt Francona (Germany, organic)
SOLD OUT
White wine for a barbecue? We’ve got it! This wine from Germany is perfect for a hot, California day. It’s made of three grapes you’ve probably never heard of. (Extra credit for those who know Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, or Bacchus.) Know them or not, this is a great wine for well-spiced foods, be they off the grill or from your favorite Asian restaurant. We’re not alone in our love for this wine – it’s a New York Times wine club selection.
$13.50/bottle, $148.50/case w/10% discount

2010 Peciña Rioja Joven (Spain) SOLD OUT
This wine is the younger sibling of the Peciña Grand Riserva that won high praise from Eric Asimov in the New York Times. This oak-free darling is 100% Tempranillo. If you’ve always wanted to know what real Rioja tastes like, here’s your chance.
$13.50/bottle, $145.80/case w/10% discount

2010 Tami Frappato (Sicily)
SOLD OUT
Arianna Occhipinti, the island’s premier natural wine maker, brings us this robust red. Think Sophia Loren circa 1950, with that lovely Italian accent, and you’ll get the idea. Like Sophia, this wine is easy to spend time with. It is made from Sicily’s native grape, Frappato.
$17.00/bottle, $183.60/case w/10% discount

2009 Chateau d’Oupia Minervois Rouge (Languedoc, France) SOLD OUT
This wine is a blend of Carignan, Syrah and Grenache. Not only do we love this wine, Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate does, too. Here’s what he had to say: “Château d'Oupia has produced the ideal bistro wine. Dark, ruby-colored, the wine is wonderfully clean and pure, with an exuberant personality, and gobs of rich, peppery, red and black fruit...” We think you’ll agree.
$13.50/bottle, $145.80/case w/10% discount

Special Offer
Once again, we are delighted to offer the wines of Cowan Cellars. Try the two Pinots side by side and you will experience the difference between Pinot Noir made from grapes grown on the coast and those grown inland. The contrast is wonderful. The Isa is a white wine made like a red wine. As a special introductory offer on the Cowan Cellars Wines, we are taking 15% off the single bottle price and 20% off of purchase of three bottles or more. Please feel free to mix and match. The winemaker Jim Cowan wrote the descriptions of the wines.

2010 Cowan Cellars Isa (Lake County)
In Friuli and across the border in Slovenia, several producers make wines that have come to be known as “orange” wines. These are skin-fermented white wines, usually from grapes indigenous to the region, often somewhat oxidized and occasionally, buried in amphora in the ground to age. They are not for everyone but they are distinctive and, in a world where very few wines surprise, these do. I like to drink it with a wide variety of dishes; its savories seem to accompany almost any food except red meat.
Regularly $27.00/bottle Special Introductory Price $22.95

2010 Cowan Cellars Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast (Sonoma County)
A drive along the Pacific Coast Highway near Cazadero will take you to within inches of the Pacific Ocean and within three miles of this vineyard, in the same area as the noted Hirsch Vineyard. This bottling is translucent and brilliant; dominated by red fruit scents, it is silky and feathery across the palate, with intense cherry flavors augmented by earth and truffle notes; a medium length, refreshing finish.
Regularly $36.00/bottle Special Introductory Price $30.60

2010 Cowan Cellars Pinot Noir Bennett Valley (Sonoma County)
This wine is from a new vineyard in the Bennett Valley AVA. Early mornings are often foggy among the vines and the temperatures always seem to be cooler than anywhere else along the road where it is situated. Even so, the sun can be intense here and choosing a picking date is challenging. We try to watch the acids in the grapes so that when we pick, these wines will have the verve and structure needed to accompany food, and, the aromatics that make pinot such an enticing drink. Lots of black cherry scents and flavors here with some spice notes and a smooth delivery.
Regularly $36.00/bottle Special Introductory Price $30.60

Also, we are pleased to offer you two selections from Argot Wines. If you were at the YES tasting last November, you may have had the good fortune to taste some of Justin Harmon’s fabulous wines. Please don’t miss these delicious bottles.

2011 Argot Couture Rosé (California organic 500 ml)
SOLD OUT
Couture is stunningly beautiful in all respects. Packaged in a tall, slender, brilliantly clear 500 mL bottle, it is apparent from the outset Couture is not your typical Rosé. An elegant wine whose versatility affords it to shine equally well as either an afternoon sipper or paired with salad as part of an extravagant multi-course meal. We find that it is best served with a deep chill to enhance refreshment and precision of flavor.
$18.00 per bottle/please inquire for case price

2010 Argot The Articulator White Wine Sonoma County
SOLD OUT
Another eyebrow-raising blend of Roussanne and Chardonnay, The Articulator is a fitting successor to its highly touted older sibling, 2009's Happenstance--Wine Spectator's highest scoring white wine in its annual California Rhone report.
$35.00 per bottle/please inquire for case price

It's almost summer!

Hooray! The rain seems to have stopped, and the temperatures are warming up nicely. In wine country the vines are coming alive, and here at Community Wines, we are anticipating new arrivals from our producers.

If you are visiting us seeking wine for the YES Foundation auction, please don’t hesitate to call us or send us an email. If you would like, just let us know what your budget is, and we’d be happy to pick a wine for you, and get it where it needs to go for the auction.

2010 Peciña Rioja Joven (Spain) NEW!
This wine is the younger sibling of the Peciña Grand Reserva that won high praise from Eric Asimov in the New York Times. This oak-free darling is 100% Tempranillo. If you’ve always wanted to know what real Rioja tastes like, here’s your chance.

$13.50/bottle, $145.80/case w/10% discount

The Whites
2009 Tajinaste Blanco (Canary Islands)
Made from 100% Listan Blanco, also known as Palomino, this delightful white has a flavor profile of pear and apple, with an emphasis on the pear. It is delicate and sensual. The amount of effort that goes into growing these grapes is truly spectacular, and the payoff is in the bottle.
$14/bottle, $151.20/case w/10% discount

2010 Jo Landron-Domaine de la Louvetrie Muscadet (Loire Valley, France, Organic)
Muscadet is the perfect wine to pair with anything from the sea -- it even works well when you’re just having salty thoughts! Some Muscadets are a little austere in their youth. Not this one -- it’s showing a little leg. The wine is full flavored and has great minerality.
$14.50 bottle, $156.60/case w/10% discount

2010 François Chidaine (Loire Valley, France, Biodynamic)
This vintage of the Touraine Sauvignon Blanc is razor focused. The wine is generously packed with citrus and minerals and is best described as refreshing.  This makes a great pairing with seafood, and we particularly enjoy it as an aperitif or with our salad course. As the weather warms, you will want a bottle of this close by your side to keep you cool.
$14.50 bottle, $156.60/case w/10% discount

The Reds
2009 Le Claux Delorme Valençay Rouge (Valençay, France)
Here we have a harmonious wine with flavors of dark red fruits, cherries and plums combined with a pinch of black pepper. This wine is a blend of 40% Gamay, 30% Côt (Malbec), 10% Pinot Noir & 20% Cabernet Franc. This, like all of our wines, is incredibly food friendly.
$15/bottle, $162/case w/ 10% discount

2010 Vera de Estenas Bobal (Utiel-Requena, Spain)
Bobal is an indigenous Spanish grape from the Mediterranean coast. This wine has the qualities of an old style California Cabernet. It’s got grip and will hold your attention like Penelope Cruz does on the screen. It’s perfectly suited to a rich meal.
$13.50/bottle, $145.80/case w/10% discount

These are skin-fermented white wines, usually from grapes indigenous to the region, often somewhat oxidized and occasionally, buried in amphora in the ground to age. They are not for everyone but they are distinctive and, in a world where very few wines surprise, these do. Curiously, the wine does not taste much of sauvignon blanc; rather, it comes across as savory, with some grip in the mouth and more texture than most sauvignons. I think it tastes a bit like tangerines but there is also something wild and unique about it. And it certainly has a darker color. Others tell me it pairs well with hard cheeses but I like to drink it with a wide variety of dishes; its savories seem to accompany almost any food except red meat.
Regularly $27.00/bottle Special Introductory Price $22.95

2010 Cowan Cellars Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast (Sonoma County)

This bottling is translucent and brilliant; dominated by red fruit scents, it is silky and feathery across the palate, with intense cherry flavors augmented by earth and truffle notes; a medium length, refreshing finish. This reminds of Chambolle when it is young and the weightless nature of the wine gives it a feminine delivery. For me, the kind of wine to have with lighter fare, and even some seafood; for the vegetarian cuisine we often have for dinner at my house, perfect. Should be fresh and lively at release and gain depth and complexity over a decade in the cellar.

The finished wine is 13.4% alcohol, remarkably dark for a pinot but fresh and alive. This wine is ready to drink now but there is sufficient structure to age it, if one wished. Lots of black cherry scents and flavors here with some spice notes and a smooth delivery.

Wines for Spring

Our spring offer is a delight!

The response to our January offer was overwhelmingly positive, so we decided to restock many of our Spanish selections. Additionally, we have three wonderful new wines from Beaune Imports, all organic and biodynamic. These clean, crisp wines are just perfect for spring. Also, four of the wines in this offer are only $12.00. We assure you it is no small feat to find wines of this quality at this price point. It’s hard work, but someone’s got to do it! Also, for the month of March, we are donating 10% of all sales to the YES Foundation.

And, if that isn’t enough, we are truly pleased to present three wines from Cowan Cellars. Some of you have had the pleasure of tasting these wines at dinner at our house or at the YES tasting in November. These wines are very special to us. Brad has had the privilege of helping Jim and Diane make these beautiful wines. We encourage you give them a try. You won’t be disappointed! Details on all the wines are below.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Francie and Brad

Jo Landron-Domaine de la Louvetrie Muscadet (Loire Valley, France, Organic)
Muscadet is the perfect wine to pair with anything from the sea -- it even works well when you’re just having salty thoughts! Some Muscadets are a little austere in their youth. Not this one -- it’s showing a little leg. Think Angelina Jolie at the Oscars… The wine is full flavored and has great minerality.

$14.50 bottle, $156.60/case w/10% discount

Moulin de Gassac (Languedoc, France, Organic)
Rosé Alert! Here in our fair village, the blooming of the daffodils, the bud break of the buckeyes and the appearance of asparagus at the farmers market mark the start of spring. At Community Wines spring means rosé. This year’s is a combination of 55% Syrah and 45% Grenache. This delightful tea rose pink wine is very food friendly, and a great companion with just about anything or anyone.
$12.00/bottle, $129.60/case w/10% discount

2009 Tajinaste Blanco (Canary Islands, Spain)
Made from 100% Listan Blanco, also known as Palomino, this delightful white has a flavor profile of pear and apple, with an emphasis on the pear. It is delicate and sensual. The amount of effort that goes into growing these grapes is truly spectacular, and the payoff is in the bottle.
$14/bottle, $151.20/case w/10% discount

2009 Xavier Clua Tinto (Catalunya, Spain)
It’s back, our most popular red! If you like wines from Spain, this one will steal your heart. Pour yourself a glass, and you will get the pure expression of the terroir and the grapes. There’s no oak on this wine, and the fruit shines through. It’s a blend of Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo and Merlot.
$12.00/bottle, $129.60/case w/10% discount

2009 Primitivo Quiles Cono 4 (Alicante, Spain)
This was one of our favorites from our very first offer two years ago, so we’ve brought it back!
The Cono 4 is made from the Mourvèdre grape as it is known in France and the United States. In Spain it’s known as Monastrell. This wine is like someone you meet at a party who you want to see again -- easily approachable and welcoming. I’m not one to judge a book by its cover, but I must admit to having a soft spot for the old style label.
$12.00/bottle, $129.60/case w/10% discount

2010 Bielsa Tinto Vinas Viejas Garnacha (Aragon, Spain)
There is no pretense to this delicious wine that was also part of our first offer. It is made from the Grenache grape and is truly built for comfort. This dry red is soft and delicate, plush and elegant. It brings to mind cherries. Some friends who sampled it recently had this to say: “fruity but not sweet”, “the flavor goes and goes” and “ooh, that’s nice!” We agree.
$12.00/bottle, $129.60/case w/10% discount

2009 Verasol TN Tempranillo (Navarra, Spain)
Here we have more treble than bass. The TN is racy, with hints of Chinese five spice and peppercorn. It’s a vibrant, tasty number that we think you’ll enjoy. It’s so easy to drink, that you can toss the cork once you’ve opened it.
$12.00/bottle, $129.60/case w/10% discount

2010 Vera de Estenas Bobal (Utiel-Requena, Spain)
Bobal is an indigenous Spanish grape from the Mediterranean coast. This wine has the qualities of an old style California Cabernet. It’s got grip and will hold your attention like Penelope Cruz does on the screen. It’s perfectly suited to a rich meal.
$13.50/bottle, $145.80/case w/10% discount

2009 Galgueira Mencia (Galicia, Spain)
Although the Mencia grape is indigenous to Spain, this wine has a Syrah like profile. It has a beautiful purplish color, and notes of white pepper. It’s pleasantly spicy, and imminently approachable. I would have brought this wine as my prom date had it been allowed.
$13.50/bottle, $145.80/case w/10% discount (Limited Quantities)

And now for the Cowan Cellars! Try the two Pinots side by side and you will experience the difference between Pinot Noir made from grapes grown on the coast and those grown inland. As a special introductory offer on the Cowan Cellars Wines, we are taking 15% off the single bottle price and 20% off of purchase of three bottles or more. Please feel free to mix and match. New Wines for a New Year

Greetings!

Spain: Cervantes, Penelope Cruz, tapas and some of the most delightful and delicious wines in the world. We are pleased to offer you six Spanish wines from the importer José Pastor, including one from the Canary Islands. These wines leave me with the same feeling I get when watching a film by Pedro Almodovor – sheer pleasure.

Spain is a diverse country, with over a dozen languages spoken in addition to Spanish. There’s even more diversity, however, in the wines. Try these and you will see for yourself -- no two are alike.

¡Viva España!
Francie and Brad

Wines for the Holidays!

Happy Holidays!

Thank you to all who joined us for the YES tasting. The event was a great success and we raised approximately $8,000 for the foundation, which provides art and music classes to the children of Ross Valley Schools. To keep the spirit of giving going, we are donating 5% of all our December sales to Ross Valley School District parents to the YES Foundation.

In the spirit of the music that the YES Foundation brings so many kids, this month we’re bringing you some wines that really sing. Whether you’re in the mood for rock and roll, jazz or classical, we’ve got you covered.

At the holidays our customers often ask for an affordable wine that will please a wide range of guests. We searched high and low, and finally we found it! This offer features a natural red wine in a box. This, however, is not your grandma’s box wine. This Côtes du Rhône is absolutely delicious, and is perfect for holiday gatherings. Like every wine Francie and I sell, we drink this one too. If you are concerned about serving it from a box, just decant it. Your guests will never know!

For those of you hosting a special holiday meal, or looking for the perfect gift to bring to your host, we have some great new reds and whites. In addition, we are proud to offer an amazing Champagne at a price so low I’m blushing. We also have a sparkling wine the color of strawberries that is just fun to drink.

And though Black Friday has come and gone, we are having a sale! Please check at the end of this offer for wines that have been discounted. This sale applies to wines we have in stock and there are not further discounts on these bottles. Get them while they last!

Also, we have some gorgeous glassware for sale. This is definitely the best deal on stemware you will find anywhere. These 18 ounces Schott Zwiesel glasses usually sell for $12.00 each, but we are offering a six-pack of the glasses for only $42.00 plus tax.
And now, the wines…

2009 From The Tank Red 3 liters (4 bottles) Côtes du Rhône (France)
Open this box and you will enjoy the simple pleasure of a good glass of red wine. I find it incredibly satisfying to have the opportunity to share this bargain with you. The wine is easy to drink, and I am sure you and your guests will enjoy this blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan.
$38/box

2009 Xavier Clua Tinto (Spain)
If you like wines from Spain, this one will steal your heart. Pour yourself a glass, and you will get the pure expression of the terroir and the grapes. There’s no oak on this wine, and the fruit shines through. It’s a blend of Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo and Merlot.
$13/bottle, $140.40/case w/ 10% discount

2009 Le Claux Delorme Valencay rouge (France)
Here we have a harmonious wine with flavors of dark red fruits, cherries and plums combined with a pinch of black pepper. This wine is a blend of 40% Gamay, 30% Côt (Malbec), 10% Pinot Noir & 20% Cabernet Franc. This, like all of our wines, is incredibly food friendly.
$15/bottle, $162/case w/ 10% discount

2009 Casina di Cornia Rosso Toscano (Italy)
I admit I have a soft spot for the Tuscan town of Sienna. Not only is it a beautiful place, but we spent part of our honeymoon there nearly ten years ago. This wine makes me feel like I am back in Italy, enjoying life at a slower pace. The wine is a blend of 65% Sangivoese, 20% Canaiolo, 10% Cilliegiolo and 5% Trebbiano. I find the wine soft and pleasant, low in acid and thoroughly delicious. We plan on celebrating our anniversary with a bottle.
$20/bottle, $216/case w/ 10% discount

2010 Domaine Valensac Chardonnay (France)
I love Chardonnay, but I have a hard time finding it made in the style I enjoy. I like Chardonnay that’s crisp and refreshing, without the taste of oak, and this one fits the bill perfectly.
$15/bottle, $162/case w/ 10% discount

Latitude 50 Sekt Rose (Germany)
This sparkling wine is, in a word, sexy. If it had a little black book, you’d want to be in it. The name refers to the latitude at which the grapes are grown. With a creamy nose and a decadent palate, it is so nice to come home to, or take along with you to a friend’s.
$16/bottle, $172.80/case w/ 10% discount

Bernard Ledru Champagne (France)
Perhaps it’s the influence of the Occupy Movement, but I’ve got to hold up my homemade sign: Just say no to Veuve Cliquot! Why, you ask? Because when you make millions of bottles, something of the soul gets lost. This Champagne is made by a real person, not a multinational corporation. And, it’s less expensive to boot! The true reason to buy this, however, is that it’s simply delicious. What better way to ring in the nouvelle année than with some Champagne?

SALE WINES!

2009 Marquès de Montemor Tinto (Portugal)
Our first selection from Portugal is made predominantly from Touriga Nacional, a grape popular in Portugal. The wine maker, a German woman living in Portugal, modestly describes it this way: “An honest wine, fruity with fine berry flavors, simply round and balanced and all this without wood. Sometimes I like to drink it cold, tastes fantastic.” My winemaker friend Justin tasted this with me and his comment was “Polished.” Not like a car, but an old wooden banister.
SALE! $10.50/bottle (regularly $12.00)

2009 And Co The Supernatural (New Zealand, organic)
And now for a completely different hemisphere! Not only is this Sauvignon Blanc made from organic grapes by a woman winemaker; it is out of this world. The winery’s website describes this wine better than I could: “passion fruit and guava, spice and honeysuckle lime and a luscious long palate.” This still wine comes in a champagne bottle and is topped with a bottle cap. You’ll need a cork to close it, if you manage to have any left over. (We didn’t.)
SALE! $16/bottle (regularly $19.00)

2009 Haut Bourg Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu Sur Lie (France)
This white epitomizes our goal to bring you great wines from the road less travelled. This Muscadet is a light white that jumps out at you from the glass. With a perfect combination of citrus and minerality, it goes beautifully with anything from the sea, and makes for a great aperitif.
SALE! $12.00/bottle (regularly $13.50)

J. Laurens Brut Cremant de Limoux NV (France)
This delightful sparkling wine was such a hit at our tasting event, that we only have a handful of bottles left. This tastes like it’s for special occasions, but has the price of an everyday wine. Pour it to ring in the new year, or to toast your friends and loved ones. They’ll think it’s an expensive Champagne. It’s up to you if you want to let them in on the secret.

Late Summer Wines

Greetings!

This summer we tasted lots of wines from around the world. This offering is the fruit of our labors. It includes several firsts for Community Wines: wines from Portugal, New Zealand and the Republic of Georgia. In addition, we have some Spanish and French selections. Please enjoy reading about the new wines as well as some past favorites. Also, we will begin taking credit cards, if all goes well, within the month. We are getting with the 21st century! Lastly, if you know anyone who would like to rent out 500 or so square feet of retail space to two schoolteachers, let us know! We’re contemplating a small store front.

To purchase any of these wines, send us an email at communitywines@gmail.com or call us at 415-454-1244.  We look forward to hearing from you!

New Wines

The Whites

2009 Haut Bourg Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu Sur Lie (France)
Our first white epitomizes our goal to bring you great wines from the road less travelled. When we tried it, I insisted we carry it. Brad was reluctant – most Americans (excepting the serious wine geeks in need of therapy) aren’t familiar with Muscadet, a wine from the Loire Valley. (It’s true that we can’t remember seeing Muscadet sold anywhere in Marin.) I bet him that anyone who tried it would love it and become a convert. Let’s just say I won, and he’s glad about it! This Muscadet is a light white that jumps out at you from the glass. With a perfect combination of citrus and minerality, it goes beautifully with anything from the sea, and makes for a great aperitif.

The Reds

2008 Schuchmann Saperavi (Republic of Georgia)
Announcing Community Wines’ first ever selection from a former Soviet republic! No surprise here: it’s red. This is made from the Saperavi grape, which is indigenous to Georgia. The Saperavi grape makes for wines that remind me of dark fleshed plums. I can smell them in this bottle. This wine has gentle tannins and a light, refreshing acidity. It’s dark in color but light on the palate. If you’ve never tried wines from this part of the world, now is the time! We only have 18 bottles for sale – this wine sells like blini (Georgian hotcakes).
$14.50 per bottle/$156.60 per case w/10% discount

2009 Marquès de Montemor Tinto (Portugal)
Our first selection from Portugal is made predominantly from Touriga Nacional, a grape popular in Portugal. The wine maker, a German woman living in Portugal, modestly describes it this way: “An honest wine, fruity with fine berry flavors, simply round and balanced and all this without wood. Sometimes I like to drink it cold, tastes fantastic.” My winemaker friend Justin tasted this with me and his comment was “Polished.” Not like a car, but an old wooden banister.
$12.00 per bottle/$129.60 per case w/10% discount

2007 Tarantas Crianza Tempranillo (Spain, organic)
If I could find value wines like this all the time, you’d be reading about me in the New York Times. I hunt hard for a good bargain, and when I say a good bargain, I mean a wine that tastes like it costs far more than it does. When I found this one, I immediately bought three cases. I was afraid the price in the catalog was a misprint! Made from organic grapes (90% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon), this wine is uncomplicated and is made for drinking with just about anything. It’s easy to like. Try some, and you’ll see why.
$11.00 per bottle/$118.80 per case w/10% discount

2009 Zaumau (Spain)
Here we have a fabulous combination of Garnacha and Samso, or what the French call Grenache and Carignan. It will gently seduce you with its charms. Imagine a Zinfandel that’s neither sweet nor hot, singing to you like a siren. This wine is very low in acid and tannins, a rare thing in the Priorat region of Spain, where it’s made in the traditional manner. To see some photos of the winery, click here.
$20.00 per bottle/$216.00 per case w/10% discount

Returning favorites

2010 Vevi
Same great wine, new label!  We’ve brought back one of our most popular wines, the Vevi. This wine is light and refreshing. You won’t taste any butter or oak in this bottle, unless you add them yourself. This comes with a screw top, which is convenient for those who just can’t wait to get some into their glasses.
$13.50 per bottle/$145.80 per case w/10% discount

2010 Benaza Monterrei Godello (Spain)
Godello, an indigenous Spanish grape from Galicia, is the star of this apple crisp white wine. This wine will win friends and influence people… that is, if you share it.
$13.50 per bottle/$145.80 per case w/10% discount

2009 François Chidaine Touraine Rouge (France, biodynamic)
This bottle has all the hallmarks of a Community Wines selection, a wine that reflects the place it was made and the person who made it. This wine is made from equal parts Cabernet Franc, Cot (Malbec) and Pinot d'Aunis; these grapes form a wine of balance, distinctiveness and clarity. Here you will find pleasant tannins and lovely acidity ready to complement your evening meal. Pour yourself a glass and take a journey to a place you may never have been before. When you return, you will find yourself richer for the experience.
$15.00 per bottle/$162.00 per case w/10% discount

2008 Le Roc Cuvée Classique (Red, France)
This wine is a blend of Negrette, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has personality. It’s a welterweight in a heavyweight world with medium body that reminds me of a gymnast or a yogi. You know, the kind of folks with those lithe bodies whose abilities aren’t always apparent until you see them do their thing. Serve this with something grilled and you will see it do its thing.
